Ives: Three Places in New England
Mozart: Violin Concerto No. 4, D Major
Caroline Goulding, violin
Bartók: Rumanian Folk Dances
Brahms: Serenade No. 2
March's concert begins with a profoundly original score from American maverick and genius Charles Ives. In Three Places in New England, Ives created a freely-conceived but meticulously rendered score of atmosphere, clustered tones, and dashes of Americana. We will continue our tradition of featuring talented young soloists from one of the world's leading music conservatories, the Cleveland Institute of Music. Brilliant young violinist Caroline Goulding joins us for Mozart's sunny Fourth Violin Concerto, rife with so many dance rhythms that it will hard to keep your feet still! After intermission, we will play Bartók's brief but brilliant Rumanian Folk Dances, complete with stomping strings and swirling clarinets. The evening is capped with a continuation of our multi-season survey of the symphonic works of Johannes Brahms. The Second Serenade famously leaves out any violins so that the rich colors of the violas, cellos, and basses give this wonderful work a distinct sound palate. The music is filled with invention, melody, and sensuous harmony as only Brahms can provide.
